WORTHING’S mayor had to cancel her charity ball just days before the event because of a lack of interest.
Mayor Ann Barlow was due to stage her farewell ball at the Pavilion Theatre on Saturday, but had to cancel after only 100 people had bought tickets.
She said: “It was very sad to have to cancel, but we just did not sell enough tickets. The capacity of the Pavilion is 290 and we sold about 100 tickets.
“We did have a lot of interest in the ball but, because of the recession, people said they could not afford to come.”
Tickets for the ball were priced at £50 per person, to include a champagne reception, canapés, meal and entertainment.
Ann added: “I’m very sad for the charities, but many of them have said they’ve also had to cancel events in the past year. The recession is obviously affecting people, but my events throughout the year were very well supported, and I am so grateful for the support I have received.”
