Worthing MP backs hospital plan

PROPOSALS that would see major services kept at both Worthing and Chichester's St Richard's hospitals have been welcomed.

The NHS West Sussex board will, later this month, be recommended to agree a proposal to maintain inpatient paediatrics, emergency surgery, and inpatient maternity services at both hospitals.

NHS West Sussex chief executive John Wilderspin said: "This is very good news for patients and the public in West Sussex, and for the NHS in the county."

The proposal could be the last part of the Fit for the Future process, which initially threatened major downgrading at the two hospitals.

But the process was put on hold and the two hospital trusts merged.

Mr Wilderspin said: "The merger of the two trusts following Fit for the Future has produced new opportunities for joint working, which mean that we believe these three services can now be retained on two sites."

The proposals have been backed by Worthing West MP Peter Bottomley and county council leader Henry Smith.
