Worthing Museum and Art Gallery judges wowed by art

JUDGES had their work cut out when they examined 250 art works shortlisted for Worthing Museum and Art Gallery’s open art competition.

The competition called on artists from across the area to pick up their brush, ink roller, clay or camera to produce work they thought was a worthy winner.

Judges Nick Toovey (auctioneer), Dudley Sawyer (art tutor) and councillor Vicky Vaughan spent a day at the museum debating about the art work.

They looked at paintings, prints, drawings, photographs and sculptures and followed strict criteria to see if the artworks fitted the competition’s three themes – food for thought, celebrations and sport and fitness.

Art curator Emma Walder said: “The judges were impressed by the high quality of work submitted and the wide age range of artists, from 14 to 80-plus years old.

“Despite torrential rain, more than 200 people attended the opening preview on Friday. Six prizes were given by Worthing mayor Ann Barlow, who was so excited by the displays that she bought a painting.”

The prize winners were Barry Williams, for Omega 3 in the food for thought category, Emma Patrick, for Before the Party 2 in the celebrations category, and Maggie Tredwell, for In the Rough in the sport and fitness category.
