Worthing pet owner fined for not clearing up dog’s mess

AN ‘IRRESPONSIBLE’ dog owner, who did not pick up her pet’s waste after it defecated on Worthing promenade, has been fined after a successful prosecution by the borough council.

On January 20, Alexandra Capone, of Marine Drive, Worthing, was spotted by a foreshore inspector allowing her dog to foul on the coastal pathway, which is popular with pedestrians and tourists.

She made no attempt to clear up the waste, a spokesman for Worthing Borough Council said. The spokesman added: “When confronted by the inspector, Capone became abusive, leaving him no choice but to call dog warden to deal with the issue.

“On arrival, the dog warden noticed that Capone had left the area, leaving behind her dog’s waste.”

The warden took a statement from the inspector and prepared a penalty notice to deal with the offence.

Despite the notice being delivered to Capone’s address, and a number of reminders being issued, she made no response, prompting the council to prosecute, the spokesman said.

Capone attended a hearing at Worthing Magistrates’ Court earlier this month (July 10) and was found guilty of failing to remove her dog’s waste, leading to a fine of £50, a £15 victim surcharge and £100 costs.

Councillor Clive Roberts, cabinet member for the environment at the council, said: “This is a really strong start to our crackdown on irresponsible dog owners, with the council securing three successful prosecutions in quick succession.

“I want to thank all the pet owners who do their bit to keep our streets clean and reassure them we are doing all we can to deal with those who aren’t so considerate.”
