Worthing school’s new wing officially opened by mayor

Downsbrook Middle School’s new wing was declared open by mayor of Worthing Bob Smytherman.

Head teacher Jonathan Grover said: “The afternoon was a lovely occasion and celebrated the opening of the new area.

“We were delighted that the Mayor could join us and perform the opening ceremony. The new wing provides our children with wonderful learning opportunities and we are very proud.”

Councillor Jeremy Hunt, the newly appointed West Sussex County Council cabinet member for education and skills, WSCC officers, school governors, community members, parents, staff and pupils all attended the opening.

Lynette Bickers, chair of governors, said: “The opening of this building marks the start of a new and exciting future for Downsbrook. I am proud to be part of this school.”

The school’s award-winning Glee choir performed two songs at the opening. This was followed with a tour of the new classrooms and specialist rooms, and the unveiling of a plaque.

Refreshments were served by the school prefects.

The new wing was funded by WSCC, costing upwards of £2 million, and has an emphasis on being eco-friendly.

The school can now house 600 pupils, up from 480, and has changed from a four form school to a five form one.
