Worthing teenager's open mic success

A WORTHING teenager has made it through the first round of a national competition for unsigned music acts.

Chloe Bryer, 17, sang one of her own songs at the audition stage of the Open Mic UK competition, which was held last Saturday (September 11) at Hove Centre, in Norton Road, Hove.

On the day, she was one of around 30 under-18s picked to go through to the regional stage of the competition, which will be held at the same venue on October 30.

The Worthing College A-level student, from Downview Road, West Worthing, said: “I’m going to take it one step at a time because, though I wanted to go through, I wasn’t putting all my hopes on it.

“When I got through I was amazed.”

Chloe, who sings and plays guitar, taught herself how to play the instrument last summer and often takes part at open-mic nights at Thomas A Becket Middle School, in Glebeside Avenue, on Tuesdays.

Should she make it through the regional heat and another performance at a larger venue, Chloe will enter the national final, held at the O2 Arena in a date not yet decided in December, with £50,000 being offered in prizes to winners.

The teenager said she was a bit nervous about her next performance but would try to enjoy it, regardless of the outcome.

She said: “I’m a little bit nervous but I’ll take it as it comes because I can only do my best.

“It’s something I enjoy, so as long as I try my best, that’s all I can do.”
