Worthing trader criticises ‘confusing’ diversion signs

Min Cooper, an artist and cartoonist, opened the Field Row Art Gallery at number 2 Field Row in Worthing six months ago.

UK Power Networks has shut off one end of the road in order to install underground electricity cables.

However Min says the work is damaging her business because misleading diversion signs are taking people away from the area.

“If I wasn’t so upset I would find it funny, well ludicrous,” she said.

“I only opened my gallery six months ago, but I was given no notice about this.

“There are three other businesses and people living here, but no-one was given any notice about them digging up the road.

“Workers have made a notice taking people around Portland Place but then a sign says the footpath is closed.

“Is this how Worthing encourages independent businesses?

“It is just so ludicrous and inept.

“I understand the work has to be done, but I don’t think it should be done just before Christmas, and it would have been nice to have been informed.

“I am a new business and as far as I’m concerned I’m losing customers.”

A spokesman for UK Power Networks said work was set to continue until around December 4: “UK Power Networks engineers are currently installing 25 metres of new underground electricity cables in Field Row, Worthing.

“Work started on Wednesday, November 25, and is authorised by the local authority to last until December 4, although we will complete the job as quickly as possible.

“Access to businesses in Field Row is being maintained throughout the work from Portland Road.

“We have contacted our customer in an effort to resolve any outstanding issues regarding the diversion signage and apologise for any inconvenience caused while this work is taking place.”

Dawn Gumbrell works at Alishea’s Alterations at 9, Field Row.

“We’ve got a queue here so the roadworks don’t seem to be affecting us,” she said.

“We are at the other end of Field Row, but the bit of road near the gallery has closed.

“There are signs up telling people where to go, but I think it is possible elderly people may not come here because they may struggle to find their way or walk along the road.”
