Worthing wood remembered in glass '“ one year on

A STAINED glass window was unveiled to remind people of the scene last January when 2,000 tons of wood washed up on Worthing's beaches.

The stained glass panel was created by Worthing artist Chris Brown and is housed in the glass partition on Worthing pier.

It was revealed on Monday, Januayr 19, as a week of activities organised by Worthing Arts Council was launched to mark the first anniversary of the timber hitting.

Also on Monday, exactly a year after a tidal wave of wood from the doomed Ice Prince swamped Worthing's beaches, some people in the town thought they were experiencing a case of dj vu.

Another load

Worthing Council leader Keith Mercer said he "nearly fell off his chair" when he heard another ship-load of timber had come adrift in gales off the south coast.

"It was thought it might be heading towards Worthing, but then the wind changed," said Mr Mercer.

Although the Sinegorsk's lost cargo was originally being blown westwards along the Channel, the wind veered round and blew the floating timber towards Kent.

Other events still to take place as part of the Ice Prince Arts Festival include a free poetry event at Worthing Library on Friday, January 23 from noon.
