Worthing youngsters clean up graffiti as punishment

FIVE youths who owned up to daubing graffiti on the wall of a garage compound spent an afternoon cleaning up their mess.

The youngsters, aged between 10 and 13, scrawled the graffiti on garages in King Edward Avenue.

PCSO Nicola Burstow, who organised the clean up, was informed of the damage by a resident and after further investigations visited the parents of the children involved.

PCSO Burstow said: “The parents were very supportive of police action and agreed for the group to clean up their mess.”

Under supervision the youths tried to remove the graffiti with the assistance of Graffiti Solutions, who are contracted by Worthing Borough Council. The area has now been cleaned.

PCSO Burstow added: “The afternoon was a chance for the youths to understand the time and cost that is required to clean up the damage they caused. They were educated on how this damage can impact on a community and was a way for them to take responsibility for their actions.

“This type of restorative justice has proved successful on this occasion and will be encouraged in the future should the circumstances fit.”
