More than 100 people attended the traditional-style fête with an excellent barbecue provided by catering manager Nicci Parish and her staff.

Jeanie Dickenson, club co-ordinator, said: “Facilities manager Mike McGinley displayed MasterChef talent with his barbecue skills – despite the intense heat of the day.”

The tables, parasols and bunting created a fun party atmosphere and members dressed in style for the occasion.

Sian Warren, assistant manager at Worthing Leisure Centre, made it her mission to ensure everyone had the best time and she was well supported by the staff, who were always ready to join in the high jinks.

The entertainment this year was in-house and kicked off with a members’ cake competition. Staff from the office judged Gloria Morgan to be the winner with her lemon drizzle and runner-up was Sue Bateman for her chocolate brownies.

The Phoenix Singers opened the event with a country sing-along medley and later, the Phoenix Players, led by Phil Spanton and assisted by Pauline Wormald, gave a variety presentation of amusing vignettes in traditional country style.

The afternoon concluded with a raffle, with prizes including a large basket of fruit donated by The Manor Parade Co-op in Salvington Road.

Jeanie said everyone was looking forward to returning to the club after the summer break.

She said: “A variety of extra activities take place at the Friday Club and they run alongside the other sport and exercise options provided.

“The singers and readers meeting monthly, and the thespians are going from strength to strength in support of the murder mystery, the next social event, the Remembrance Day service in November and preparing for their annual Christmas show.
