The project is being funded by businesses that are part of the Worthing Town Centre Initiative, in a bid to attract people to the town. The sandpit, accompanied by entertainment, will be in place until the end of August.

Worthing town centre manager Sharon Clarke said: “The beach is back through the whole of August. There will be entertainment every weekend and activities during the week.”

The installation will not
be covered again this year, despite concerns from some it was unhygienic.

Mrs Clarke said she had taken advice from other towns – none of which had covered their beaches – while it was monitored by CCTV and taxi marshals at night. She added it was raked daily and there was no evidence to suggest drunks or foxes had urinated in it.
