Yapton assistant head teacher retires after 25 years

A YAPTON school's legend is starting life away from its classrooms.

Sue Hughes has retired as the assistant head of the village primary school after 25 years working there.

She said: “I shall miss being here dreadfully. I shall miss the children’s voices, their faces and the noise in the playground.”

Each of the school’s six classes gave Mrs Hughes, 64, a keepsake book filled with their drawings and messages.

School head Mary Ramacciotti said: “Sue is a legend. She has taught these children’s parents.

“Her retirement is the end of an era for the school.

“She has been a tower of strength as my assistant head for the past four years.”

Selsey resident Mrs Hughes had taught for 43 years.

She chose the career after she found a rapport with children as a Sunday school instructor.

Her career began in Walsall before she moved to Yapton.
