Yapton friends spur on England with their own song

A group of patriotic friends in Yapton are celebrating after their World Cup Anthem won a national competition.

Mary and Jamie Huband joined forces for a dream team with their musically minded neighbour Alistair Turner to drum up support for England in South Africa.

The trio's jaunty track titled Capello, has been turned into a YouTube sensation which has attracted more than 5,500 views.

Then there's the not insignificant matter of winning the Wave 105 radio competition for best football anthem, which the station has now adopted for the entire contest.

"We were just so chuffed to win the competition," said Mary Huband of their song which features the trio with their children in marching round Yapton in the style of Peter Kay's cover of (Show Me The Way To) Amarillo.

"When we heard there wasn't going to be an official anthem, Alistair just came round to our house and got his guitar out and we started making our own song up.

"It was just a bit of fun for us but people started saying you should do something with it, so we did.

"I just can't believe we actually won the competition though '“ the radio station really loved it and sent us an email saying how much we deserved the win. I hope England can go and win their next World Cup game, I just can't wait to watch them again."

There was widespread disappointment when the Football Association announced there would be no official anthem this year.

There have been many fine efforts down over the past three decades including indie band Embrace four years ago who rode high in the charts with their uplifting effort.

Even their pop sensibilities failed to help England revisit the glories of 1966.

But so far the Yapton alternative anthem has been gaining fans around the world on YouTube, where more than 60 people posted comments praising its upbeat call to spur on the English squad.

Mrs Huband said: "We had a whale of a time making our video, which features my children Trinity and Carmen and Alistair's twin boys Curtis and Cray. I had no idea how to actually get it online but it's up there and thousands of people have seen it now."

The tune is in the process of being made available on CDbaby.com to download.
