Our excellent countryman Richard Williamson makes a vitally important point in his column this week when he says “I have been on another amble through these (Binsted and Tortington) woods just west of Arundel to remind myself of what will be carved up if a proposed new bypass is given the go-ahead”.
Large numbers of people I speak with enjoy living in this beautiful part of the world precisely because of the stunning, and as yet unspoilt, countryside, NOT because of its road connections, and they want no more roads here at all, the whole of southern England is covered by roads and anyone who knows the area can get around quite well without any more.
Williamson concludes: “You may say, as you walk through the sublime tranquility of this ancient woodland: what on earth is the human race doing to itself destroying such places of rest and peace in what is becoming a more and more polluted, noisy, troublesome, dangerous world where there is little escape from development? It would be sacrilege to smash this rich ecosystem”.
It could not have been better expressed.
