Whilst congratulating Mrs Christine Brown on being made an honorary alderman (Worthing Herald, January 1), she is not the first lady to receive that honour.
There have been, and still are, many women who are proud of the title honorary alderman conferred upon them for having served the borough of Worthing for many years. The title of honorary alderman is not gender-specific, in the same way that lady mayors are not called mayoresses.
