I agree with your recent correspondents, the public are at fault for encouraging this foraging for food in our towns, but don’t blame the gulls for this, their natural scavenging behaviour.
We have, over the years, enticed them to our eating places and even hand-fed them, instilling in them this feeding pattern until it has become a nuisance.
They will go wherever the food is, to survive.
Regarding the letter from Don and Shirley Jux (Herald, July 17), if people dislike the birds so much and consider this protected species as vermin to be culled, I would ask them to remember that they are a coastal creature here long before us, with every right to live in their natural environment. So, learn to share this with them, or move inland!
