What a privilege it was to see The Globe Theatre’s outstanding production of King Lear at The Connaught Theatre on Saturday, June 1, but what a pity that so few people took this wonderful opportunity – the theatre was only about half full.
I fully appreciate that these are difficult times for all, and £18.50 per adult ticket is a lot of money, particularly when several people want to attend.
However, it is clear that Amanda O’Reilly, manager of Worthing Theatres, is making an enormous effort to reinvigorate and develop the programmes at all Worthing’s venues and I applaud her achievements thus far.
If this venture is to succeed and Worthing is to retain its vibrant theatrical venues, we all need to support the broad range of shows on offer.
The Globe’s production was excellent, with staging, costumes, lighting and direction that made the plot easy to follow and accessible.
The acting was superb and the small cast worked tirelessly to bring the play to life.
It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening and I urge the people of Worthing to get behind their theatres and to try something new from the wonderful variety of shows currently on offer.
