Whilst I agree wholeheartedly with Duncan Barkes’s article on manners (November 1), I would like to profer the following: “I want” is used widely.
It sounds aggressive and demanding used at any age.
The alternatives I courteously suggest are the use of the words “could I have?”, “can I have?” and “may I have?”.
Our own reaction to these words is more likely to be “yes” and, if “no”, the reply would automatically be couched in a softer, more acceptable way.
