Surprise and dismay

I AM surprised and dismayed at Tim Loughton’s recent press release regarding the conversion of Worthing High School to academy status.

His assurance that “Worthing High will continue to consult widely” cannot be true as I have been told that the consultation process is now closed. On a different note – but also in response to his press release, neither Robert Woodard nor Shoreham Academies is a converter – each is a SPONSORED academy, a very different thing.

As a teacher for many years, I have been involved in discussion with a considerable number of parents over academy status and, to date, not one is in favour. Surely, the sudden re-location of last week’s meeting to a “secret” change of venue must indicate that they were trying to escape the wrath of the large number of parents who are so against this decision?

Is this another example of manipulation? Could it be a genuine error in reading what the parents are trying to tell them?

Either way, I sincerely hope that a proper consultation, open meetings in well-publicised, pre-arranged and agreed venues in which everyone who wishes to ask a question or make a point is allowed to do so fully will follow before people are forced into something with which they do not agree.
