Perhaps O.A. Cartwright is misinformed, as many are, of ivy (Worthing Herald, Thursday, April 7.)
Ivy is not a parasite, as it does not feed off the trees resources, but uses it as support to grow.
It flowers later in the year providing a valuable nectar source for insects, and the berry crop it produces at the end of winter helps out the birds when food is hard to come by. Due to its evergreen nature it also provides valuable cover for fauna during the winter months.
Whitebeam Wood is the last area of ancient woodland in the worthing area and managed with nature in mind and long may it so!
