Welcome change

The Herald’s report that Adur and Worthing councils chief executive Alex Bailey is planning a ‘big shake up’ of the council is welcome news.

It needs shaking up.

For too many years our local councils drifted along – at a high cost to local council taxpayers in terms of value for money services. Cutting ten posts and sharpening the directorate to four is overdue, but still welcome.

Bringing Adur and Worthing together has been and still is the best thing both councils have done in the last 20 years.

I do hope our council leaders will take the obvious next step of reducing the number of councillors we elect for the two areas.

And, at the same time, get in line with other local councils by having one election every four years.

After years of deep pessimism I am becoming increasingly optimistic. Keep going, Mr Bailey.

I look forward to more good news.
