Youths seriously hurt in scooter crash

TWO teenagers were seriously injured when their scooter came off the road and hit a brick wall in South Street, Lancing, on Thursday afternoon.

Police said it was a miracle that no one walking along was hit, as the moped had mounted the pavement outside the busy Lancing Parish Hall.

The rider, a 15-year-old local boy, was taken to Worthing Hospital, as was his 18-year-old male pillion passenger. Both, who haven't been named, had serious injuries.

Traffic PC Andrew Slark said the Piaggio 125cc motorcycle appeared to have left the road after the driver failed to negotiate a bend. It then mounted the pavement outside the entrance to the parish hall and hit a wall.

"It was a miracle no pedestrians were hit as the scooter went on to the pavement," he added. "We are appealing for witnesses to the crash, which happened around 2.25pm.
