Archer Marc is on target in national championships

A YOUNG archer is aiming high after arrowing to victory to be crowned the junior national indoor under-14 recurve champion.

Marc Charlesworth, who is a Worthing High School student, was on target in the Junior National Indoor Championships at the Ricoh Centre, in Coventry, in December, where he shot a new personal best score of 561. His score saw him leapfrog the field to be crowned the victor.

In August, Charlesworth competed at the first junior master’s head-to-head tournament to be held for top-level junior archers in the UK and then went on to win his category for each of the Surrey, Kent, Hampshire and Southern Counties’ Junior Championships.

The year-nine archer also shot for Sussex at the Southern Counties inter-counties team championships.

The Arundown Archery Club shooter is ranked tenth in the UK for under-18 archers and is ranked first for under-14s.

Charlesworth credits his success to the kind encouragement, advice and support provided by his family and a number of fellow archers.

His sights are set on continuing his technique changes throughout the winter and he is already relishing the prospect of competing in the 2014 season.

Worthing High PE teacher Paul Gill said: “Marc is an exceptional talent and each week he bounds up to me to tell me his latest success story.

“I know he is a focused young man who has high hopes of shooting in the Olympics for Great Britain one day.”
