Wicks looking for a third pro victory

WORTHING boxer Max Wicks is hoping he can make it a hat-trick of wins in the professional game next month.

Wicks, who turned pro last year, has won both of his fights to date.

In his first bout as a full-time fighter, he overcame Kevin McCauley with a points win in July, before he defeated Scott Hillman the same way last month.

Wicks will be returning to the ring on February 12 at the Brighton Metropole Centre, with his opponent yet to be confirmed.

The 22-year-old admitted he cannot wait to box as a professional once again, with this fight coming a lot closer to his Worthing home than his previous two bouts in London.

He said: “I’m really looking forward to my next fight as a professional.

“It should be good as I’m fighting a lot closer to home in Brighton, rather than in London where my other fights have taken place.

“Hopefully, I’ll be able to win the fight in front of a big crowd and gain some supporters along the way.

“My methods haven’t really changed since making the move from amateur to professional.

“I trained really hard when I was an amateur and I’m continuing to do the same now.

“Obviously, you have that extra pressure as a professional and it’s important to keep training hard.

“But this is what I have wanted to do and to have the chance of competing as a professional is great for me and my team.”

Wicks is trained and managed by his father, Leigh, while he also receives some additional coaching from Simon Partner.

He added: “My dad is my manager and trainer. It helps sometimes having someone so close to you working with you.

“I’ve also got Simon helping me out as well, he’s really good and makes sure any time I need a session he is there.”

The middleweight talent admitted that his ultimate goal is to one day hold one of the British boxing titles. But the Worthing boxer knows that feat is a long way off and he will need to keep putting in the hard work to get there.

Wicks said: “My ultimate ambition is to one day hold one of the British titles.

“I’m not sure how many fights I’d need to win to get myself into contention but I just need to keep winning and see where that takes me.

“If the opportunity ever came to box abroad, that would be something I would consider as well but I’m just focusing on my next fight at present.”
