Cornish Pirates man Davies set for new role at Christ's Hospital

Outgoing Cornish Pirates director of rugby Ian Davies will take up a new role at Christ's Hospital later this year.

The former Sussex-based level four coach has previously been director of student sport at the University of Chichester, director of coaching at Haywards Heath Rugby Club and director of rugby at and Worthing Rugby Club.

He left Worthing Raiders back in 2009 to take a new role at the Championship club in Cornwall where he was the forwards coach and went on to be the director of rugby in 2012.

Davies will take up a similar director of rugby role at Christ’s Hospital from September 1, replacing the outgoing Andy Turner who is retiring in June.

The school has a longstanding tradition of rugby success with Alumni such as current Wasps and England player Joe Launchbury - a player Davies knows well, having coached him in his early days at Worthing Raiders.

The RFU coach educator, who has coached England Counties XV, the Barbarians and is currently the assistant coach for the England Students, will be responsible for developing rugby coaching and playing philosophy working with teams, coaches and individuals building on quality coaching.

Dave Messenger, director of sport at Christ’s Hospital said: “We aim to deliver a rugby programme that allows pupils to strive for excellence in an enjoyable and positive environment.

“The high quality of coaching is our hallmark and in recent years, this has been mainly down to current Director of Rugby, Andy Turner, RFU Level IV coach who is retiring in June.

“I believe that Ian will contribute significantly to the future success of rugby at Christ’s Hospital.”

During his time with the Pirates, the club won the British and Irish Cup in 2010 and reached the Championship play-off final in 2011 and 2012.

Cornish Pirates have reported that due to delays over ongoing stadium plans, ‘budget constraints’ have meant Davies can no longer continue his role there.
