CRICKET: Round-up (June 24)

DROPPED catches cost Clymping Cricket Club on Saturday in their draw with bottom-of-the-table Portslade in West Sussex Invitation League Division 1.

After being put into bat, Clymping scored 201-8 from their 49 overs but Portslade's last pair batted out 14 balls for the draw and they finished on 169-9.

Kim Dean batted through Clymping's innings to finish unbeaten on 110 – an innings in which he hit 12 fours. He put on 62 for the sixth wicket with Neil Pierce, who scored 29, and then had stands worth 40 with Richard Waddington for the eighth wicket and an unbroken 22 for the ninth with James Salisbury.

Dan Wainwright then top-scored with 52 in Portslade's innings as they slipped from 110-2 to 167-9.

Richard Waddington led Clymping's bowling with 5-56 and Paul Challen picked up two wickets but six dropped catches, including one in the last over when Portslade were nine wickets down, cost Clymping the victory.

Clymping captain Paul Challen said: "We lacked a bit of application with the bat and seven of our eight wickets were caught, so we were just giving up our wickets.

"But Kim batted very well.

"Early on, they were well up with the rate in their innings but we pegged them back, although dropped too many catches, including some real dollies."

East Preston went down to a two-wicket defeat at home to Felbridge in the same division.

After losing the toss and being put into bat, EP scored 207-7 from their 49 overs.

EP then gave away 42 extras in Felbridge's reply as the visitors reached their target with five balls to spare.

Tim Miles hit nine fours as he top-scored with 54 from 103 balls for EP. Colin Smith struck four fours and three sixes in his 49 and Chris Williams scored 48, with nine fours and one six.

EP lost their way a bit in the middle order, though, and their captain Andy Reeves would have liked another 20 or 30 runs.

As well as the extras they conceded, EP also dropped a couple of catches – including Felbridge's No 10 batsman which, if it had been held, EP would have had three balls to dismiss the No 11.

Mark Coskin finished with 4-59 and Tom Chamberlain 3-68 for EP. Richard Laker, who dislocated his little finger on his bowling hand in the pre-match warm-up, took 1-31 from eight overs.

Reeves said: "It was quite an even game, which swung both ways throughout the day and it was just a shame we weren't on the right end of the result.

"We put down a couple of catches but the real killer was giving away 42 extras to their 11 extras.

"We'll now go to Portslade on Saturday and will, hopefully, get a decent tally of points from it."

Arundel grabbed a tie from their Sussex League Division 3 West match at Henfield when they took Henfield's last two wickets for just two runs.

Ian Dabinett-Jays was their hero as he first dismissed Ollie Morris for 22 and then had Mark Hopgood lbw for 42.

Arundel had seemed in control earlier in the game and on course for their second win of the season. After Will Clark top-scored with 42 in their total of 180, they reduced Henfield to 134-8.

But Morris and Hopgood's last-wicket stand took Henfield to the brink of victory, before Dabinett-Jays struck.

Clark had taken 3-49 from 12 overs in Henfield's innings, and Harrison Temple and Neil Chitty both picked up two wickets.

Rustington held on for a draw, nine wickets down, in their West Sussex Invitation League Division 4 game at Belgrave Adelaide.

Belgrave, after Rustington inserted them, were all out for 218 in 44.1 overs. David Mangold took 5-65 for Rustington, who then finished on 136-9 after 49 overs.
