The 22-year-old Brighton-born left-hander, who played for Worthing Cricket Club in the Sussex League Premier Division last year, is another product of the Sussex age-group system, having made his debut for the county in the under-13 team.

He has since gone on to make an impact in all three formats for Sussex and scored his maiden first-class century this season in the victory over Somerset at Taunton in July.

He averaged 64.25 in the Yorkshire Bank 40 whilst also averaging over 30 in the Friends Life t20.

Machan has also been representing Scotland, a country he qualifies for through his parents, and made both his One-Day International and International Twenty20 debuts in 2013.

His maiden ODI century came as he scored 114 in the match against Kenya in Aberdeen in June.

The new deal will see him remain at Hove until at least the end of the 2015 season.

Machan said: “I’m delighted to have signed a new contract with Sussex. After having a breakthrough season this year, there was only one place that I could see me playing my cricket over the next couple of years.

“I’d like to thank everyone who has helped me to get to where I am now and I will continue to work hard to achieve my current and future goals.”

Sussex’s professional cricket manager Mark Robinson said: “Matt had an outstanding year in all forms of the game and we are all excited about the prospect of him building on his successes of last season.”
