Bognor boss Heath ... Chichester rocks Rottingdean

Here are the latest reports from both first XIs, plus news of Bognor seconds.

Haywards Heath v Bognor

Sussex League division three

Bognor stretched their unbeaten run in sensational style.

The hosts won the toss and elected to bat but skiddy seamer Charlie La Foret (1-24) nipped in to dismiss Hannah Phelps for 11.

Jonny Phelps and skipper Callum Smith ticked the score along before Smith was bowled by spinner Joe Ashmore (1-47).

Heath took the game to Bognor as Jonny Phelps and Alex Crowther pushed forward and when Phelps got to his hundred, the omens were not good for the visitors.

This did not deter perky paceman Josh Broad (2-80) who dismissed Crowther for 50 and next man James Austin for six.

Bognor skipper Zayne Bux bagged centurion Phelps for 135 and two more Heath players to finish with three for 37 as Bognor stemmed the tide, Heath finishing on 255 for seven.

The visitors’ reply began soundly with Mikey Harris and Andy Quincey continuing their fine partnership, but Harris was bowled by Josiah Menzies for 22 and Quincey by Alex Crowther for 35.

Skipper Bux went without scoring and wonderchild Ryan Maskell was out for four and with the target 200 away.

However, the scrapping commenced in earnest with bespectacled batsman Jim Fallick and burly sidekick Luke Seward rising to the challenge and between them they brought Bognor back from the brink.

Seward was dismissed for 54 by Callum Smith (2-83) and Bognor had saved themselves from defeat but the coup-de-grace was yet to come. With over 30 needed in four overs, Fallick went to work, clattering 23 off one over and in the process making a fine 119 not out in one of the innings of the season.

Able support came from the languid Max Ashmore (16 not out) as Bognor won by five wickets and two overs to spare. The win sees Bognor stretch their lead at the top of division three to 71 points.

Rottingdean v Chichester Priory Park

Division three

Rottingdean captain John Hobbs elected to bat but the hosts were soon in trouble as the pace of opening bowlers Dan Joseph and Matt Geffen made them almost unplayable.

Joseph struck with the final ball of the first over as Simon Clarke went for just four runs. Chichester’s pace bowlers rattled through the remaining top order with Joseph also dismissing James Bergin (2), Eric Swinn-Ward (4) and Craig Lees (2).

Geffen chipped in with the wickets of Mohammed Islam (1) and George Ledden (8) as the hosts collapsed to 37 for seven.

Captain Hobbs found an able partner in Bradley Smith and passed his half-century before he was stumped by John Edwards off the bowling of Dan Weigl for 61.

Smith struck a pair of huge sixes but his cameo innings ended when Geffen was called back into the attack and removed Lee Ahmed (3) and then Smith (47) to bring the innings to a close at 140 all out. Geffen and Joseph finished with four wickets each.

Chichester started brightly in pursuit of their target as Mark Bamford and Edwards put on 36 for the first wicket in quick time.

The pair fell in quick succession as Chichester struggled to put together a meaningful partnership. Bamford (29), Dan Weigl (23), Jolyon Dannatt (22) and Simon Hasted (22) all got starts but none could guide Chichester home.

When Dannatt was dismissed, Chichester were 118 for six and Rottingdean were on top.

George Stephens was bowled for just two but Charlie Futcher’s 25 runs off just 14 balls calmed the nerves and saw Chichester over the line. He did it in style with a huge six to win the match by three wickets.

It earned Chichester the maximum 30 points and consolidates their sixth position. They are now just 42 points away from the second-placed team. Chichester host Steyning this weekend.

Bognor 2nd v Slinfold 2nd

Second XI div three west

At the Regis Oval, Bognor’s seconds returned to winning ways against league leaders Slinfold.

They won the toss and elected to bat but found themselves 73 for four. Rob Burge and Josh Seward wrestled the game back for Bognor with a 132-run partnership that ended when Seward was dismissed for 45.

Burge made fine 95 but Bognor were all out for 242.

Jim Lee (2-21) and Rich Cox reduced the visitors to 30 for four. A recovery was brought to an end through the lively Tom Woolnough (2-25) as Bognor pinned the visitors back to 86 for seven but Steve Young (44) and Umar Khan (25) kept Slinfold in it.

Tanya Wake bowled Khan before Jamie Woolnough bagged his second victim for figures of two for 52.

Cox (3-36) dismissed Young and Slinfold were bowled out for 152 to put Bognor back into third place.
