Glover relieved to come away with a draw

WORTHING Cricket Club captain John Glover was relieved to come away with a draw against Pagham on Saturday.

After being asked to field first, Worthing found it tough going. Pagham, who started the day top of Sussex League Division 2, piled on the runs and declared on 254-9 after 52.5 overs.

Worthing then struggled at the start of their reply and fell to 12-3, before they were later reduced to 120-7. However, they managed to hold on for the draw as they finished their 47 overs on 201-9.

Glover was pleased to come away with a draw in the end and said: “It was pleasing that we managed to hold on for the draw. Pagham have taken a few teams by surprise this season with their performances.

“They started well and made a good score. But we felt at the halfway point we could have chased it down.

“We lost a few early wickets and struggled throughout but, luckily, myself and Martyn Swift put on a partnership at the end.”

Pagham’s main contributions came from Ryan Barratt, who struck 74, and Eranaga Dissangge, who hit 71. Swift claimed five for 47 from 11 overs for Worthing

The dismissals of Josh Wood (one), Andy Reid (nought) and Benn Challen (four) left Worthing reeling on 12-3. They were later reduced to 120-7 after Matthew Green had fallen for 30 and Nick Oxley for 36. However, Glover hit 69 from 71 balls in a 73-run stand with Swift to frustrate the hosts.

Although Glover and Shane Felton fell, Swift finished unbeaten on 11 from 59 balls, and Luke Vinter hit four not out from two balls to ensure Worthing held on for the draw.

Worthing entertain St James’s on Saturday.
