Great weekend for Lindfield asJames plays anall-round part

The club, whose 75th cricket week open this Sunday with President’s XI game (11am), also enjoyed another emphatic victory on Sunday.

Lindfield bt Ifield CC by 120 runs (SCL 1st XI Div 2): Looking to bounce back from last week’s disappointing performance, Lindfield travelled to Ifield for a mid-table clash. Batting first, the visitors lost Rob Keen early before a partnership of 52 between Tom Howard (37) and Geoffrey Lawrence (35) steadied the ship. Michael Rippon batted through for 66no and was well supported by the fluent James Aggio-Brewe (36) as Lindfield finished on 203-5 from their 53 overs. In the searing heat, Ifield soon found themselves 2-2, firstly from a Rippon run-out and pacey bowling from Shane Yelverton, who finished with two wickets. Raza Ali’s 30 with Paul Clifford’s 22 offered the only resistance as Aggio-Brewe completed a fine match with 3-2 as Ifield were bowled out for 83.

Lindfield II bt Rye II by 100 runs (SCL 2nd XI Div 3 East): Lindfield claimed their seventh consecutive victory to take maximum points in this top-table clash. Batting first, Lindfield’s openers put on 134, Matt O’Brien hitting his second consecutive league 50 and Joe Newcombe continuing his run of form. However, a middle order stumble left them at 154-4 before Huw Jones (21) and Scott Pedley (22) helped steady the ship. Lindfield finished 232-9 as Rye captain Martin Blincow claimed 6-63.

In reply, Rye struggled to get going, with opener Ellis Hatter scoring 37 in 32 overs as wickets fell regularly at the other end. Some attacking bowling from Scott Pedley, Jones and Michael Hewett (4wkts) put Lindfield in control although Spencer Fielding bludgeoned a quick 36 before Henry Fowler ripped through the lower order with four wickets, including a hat-trick.

Lindfield III bt Burgess Hill III by 145 runs (MSL): The Swans moved into a promotion spot on Saturday with this resounding derby win. Opener Scott Clark carried his bat for 101, sharing a 160-run stand with son Alex Clark (66no). Pete Murphy claimed the only wicket, that of Mike Newcombe for 24 as Lindfield finished on 205-1.

William Spence removed both Hill openers for nought and went on take 5-23 as he was well supported by Alex Pinard (3-28). Tom Booth (20no) offered the only resistance as Tom Storer took the last wicket to finishing with somewhat bizarre figures of 0.1-0-9-1.Swans are now second.

Lindfield IV drew with Balcombe III (MSL Div 4): The 4th XI’s strong performances continued but this was a consecutive week without a win. Batting first, Lindfield posted 200 all out, helped mainly by Sean Sage’s first senior ton. He finished on 115 not out from 120 balls, hitting 20 fours. Kevin Bottomley 5-42, while Matt and Tony Rawbin took two wickets each.

Balcombe’s reply began aggressively but they were reduced to 7-2 by two wickets from Luke Sowton. Opener Tim Murrills carried his bat for 65 and was supported by Tony Rawbin (31) and Anthony Rawbin (26) as Balcombe finished defiantly on 161-3.

Lindfield Sunday XI bt Ashdown Forest by 6wkts: The Sunday XI showed improved form at Ashdown Forest as they put in the hosts and reduced them to 147-8, of which opener opener Graeme Baxter hit 66. But then No 9 Sandy Barblot’s cracked an unbeaten 74 to set a target of 206-9. Lindfield’s openers put on 115 before Bob Hopkins retired hurt on 46. Nathan Davidson made 57 and Mike Newcombe hit 35no as Lindfield won with seven balls to spare..
