Left-arm seamer Hatchett, from Upper Beeding, took two early wickets to reduce Netherlands to 28-2 in 10.2 overs, before the rain came and the match was called off, with both teams taking one point each.

The result leaves Sussex with just four points from their four matches in Group A of the Yorkshire Bank 40 competition after their second successive abandoned match. They have won one and lost one of their other games.

Hatchett, who had minor surgery on both knees during the winter, said: “Although we only played 10 overs, I had a relatively good time. I’ve shown I can open the bowling with the white ball, as well as the red ball, and I like to think that I earned my chance.

“I offer something different as I swing the white ball and I’ve been working on things, like yorkers and slower balls.

“I had a sneaky feeling I would play as Jimmy (James Anyon) and CJ (Chris Jordan) were rested.

“Hopefully, I’ve put my name in the hat for future selection now, although I might have to play a waiting game. I’ve just got to keep putting in decent performances now and keep taking wickets whenever I play.”
