The left-handed opener became a fourth victim for off-spinner Jeetan Patel as Sussex were dismissed for 191, a lead of 11. At lunch Warwickshire had reached 30 for one, 19 ahead.

Rikki Clarke had earlier picked up the wickets of Ben Brown (18) and Chris Jordan (2) after Sussex had resumed on 140 for 5 in response to Warwickshire’s 180.

The wicket still offered plenty of seam movement but Wells showed what was possible with careful application until he was bowled trying to cut a ball that kept a shade low.

Keith Barker trapped Ollie Robinson (1) in front as he swung across the line and Chris Wright wrapped up the innings when Matt Hobden (1) was leg before to a full-length ball, leaving Steve Magoffin 15 not out.

With regular opener Ian Westwood absent after he was struck on the thumb by Jordan on the first day, Warwickshire began their reply with Ateeq Javid and Varun Chopra, but Magoffin broke through with his tenth ball when Chopra was leg before working into the on side.

Warwickshire promoted Wright from No.10 to first wicket down and he and Javid survived until lunch.
