Sussex’s winter recruit from Nottinghamshire took three for 19 from his opening seven over spell and then returned to the attack to remove Gareth Andrew as Worcestershire limped to 127 for seven at lunch, still needing 120 to win.

Their openers Daryl Mitchell and Richard Oliver had put on 57 without too much trouble when Steve Magoffin nipped on back to trap Mitchell (21) lbw to spark the collapse.

Shahzad, bowling a full length at a lively pace down the slope, yorked Oliver (27) and then struck twice in four balls. After trapping Alex Gidman on the back foot he had Tom Kohler-Cadmore caught behind off an ill-judged waft for a duck.

Tom Fell and Alexei Kervezee led a recovery of sorts, taking the score to 91 when Matt Hobden had Kervezee lbw with his inswinger before left-arm spinner Ashar Zaidi deceived Fell (21) with his arm ball.

Shahzad then returned to clean up Gareth Andrew with the sixth ball of his new spell as Worcestershire slumped to 116 for seven, their hopes of victory now resting with Ben Cox, who is 15 not out, and Adam Shantry.
