Machan wins Sussex young player award

MATT Machan was named Sussex County Cricket Club’s young player of the year when the club presented their end-of-season awards on Friday evening.

The county wrapped up a third-placed finish in the County Championship when they beat champions Durham earlier in the day.

Machan, who played for Worthing in the Sussex League Premier Division last season, scoring 243 runs in six matches, took the Sussex young player award after an impressive season.

The 22-year-old scored 209 runs in the Championship for Sussex, 257 runs in List A one-day cricket and 219 runs in the t20 competition. He also struck 289 runs in eight one-day international matches for Scotland, including his maiden international century against Kenya.

Steve Magoffin was Sussex’s player of the year for the second successive season and Luke Wright was one-day player of the year. Team man of the year went to Chris Nash and Chris Jordan was the fielder of the year and the most improved player.

The performance of the season also went to Magoffin, for his 12 wickets in the win over Somerset at Horsham.
