Haywards Heath won the toss and put Goring in to bat first. Captain Alex Maynard (99) had a fantastic afternoon but fell just one short of getting his century – which would have been his first for the 1st XI.

Danny Pittham scored 41 and Ellis Woolley scored 36. Callum Smith (4-109) and Jonny Phelps (4-86) both took four wickets each for the visitors as Goring finished their 53 overs on 245-9.

Haywards Heath started their reply steadily, with James Austin top-scoring with 58.

The Goring bowlers did well, with Ellis Woolley (3-50), Aaron Wyatt (3-47) and Gareth Cook (3-47) all picking up three wickets, and the wicket of Matt Jones came by a run-out.

Haywards Heath were all out for 197 in 41.5 overs.

Captain Maynard said: “It was a pretty convincing win. It would have been my first century for the team. All of our bowlers gave a good all-round performance.

“We bowled well, we fielded well and we did everything we needed to do to win.”

With Goring now 27 points ahead of the relegation area, it was a crucial 30 points to pick up, especially with Haywards Heath one place behind them in the table.

Maynard added: “That is the most important thing, that we take 30 points off the teams that are closest to us and that is what our aim is now.”

Goring head to Rottingdean this weekend, who themselves are currently struggling in the relegation area, so it will be a crucial game for both teams.

Maynard is confident of coming away with a win and said: “We’ve got Rottingdean away this weekend and we’re confident again of being able to pick up a result. Hopefully we can get some bonus points and then go on to win it.”
