Silk and Sear guide Cuckfield to 10-wicket win

Cuckfield captain, Josh Hayward, uncharacteristically lost the toss at Horntye Park on Saturday and Hastings decided to bat. Tom Weston and Jamie Hutchings bowled tightly from the off and were rewarded with three early wickets.

Elliott Hooper and Tom Gillespie consolidated with a partnership of 46. Following a 40 minute rain delay, Hooper (28) attempted an ill-advised pull shot and was caught at mid on by Dominic Sear off the bowling of Hutchings.

Another rain delay at 60 for 4 in the 24th over, this time of more than two hours, saw an early tea. Upon resumption the innings had been dramatically shortened to 41 overs. An understandably unhappy Gillespie and Finn Hulbert went back out to push the score on for the remaining 17 overs, but Wisdom rattled Gllespie’s (22) stumps. Woolley then attempted an extravagant scoop, but Mole ran round from slip to leg slip to complete a stunning catch off Hayward.

Hubert followed shortly after to a sharp stumping by Gayler, also off Hayward. Lamb and O’Brien fell in short order, run out by Weston and caught behind off Wisdom respectively. Hastings veteran John Morgan smashed one back at Hayward who dropped a sharp chance, but dislocated his thumb in the process. Ben Candfield took over and caught Harry Scowan to bowl Hastings out for 130 in their last over.

With 35 overs to score 131 on a drying pitch, Cuckfied’s new opening duo, Jordan Silk and Dominic Sear strode to the crease. Silk played the attacking game while Sear was more watchful.

Hastings tried five bowlers to get a wicket, but it was in vain as Cuckfield completed the win by ten wickets in the 27th over. Silk finished with 79 from 71 balls including seven fours and three sixes and Sear carried his bat for 45. Cuckfield host Billingshurst next week.

Cuckfield 2nd XI v Eastbourne 2nd XI

Cuckfield won the toss and elected to bat, but lost Jack Denyer quickly for a duck. Morrissey (29) and George Galbraith Gibbons (13) made a good start, but it was Darren Senadhira (86) who anchored the Cuckfield innings as the rest of the order collapsed to help Cuckfield to 197 all out in the 49th over.

Ryan Mansell took 4/36 and Richard Smith took 3/66. Eastbourne chased it down in 38 overs only losing five wickets as Walter Huchu scored 71 and Daniel Copping hit 46 not out. Ed Catt took 2/34.

Cuckfield 3rd XI v Poynings 1st XI

Poynings won the toss put Cuckfield into bat. Graham Hart anchored the innings as Wynn (10), Rossiter (11) and Harrison (0) departed quickly. Dan Turner joined Hart (38) and played a majestic innings for a fell made 54.

Twenties from Charlie Best and Sam Candfield helped Cuckfield to 200 for 9 from their 47 overs. Sean Latham (40) and Will Brookes (37) looked good opening up for Poynings but both fell in quick succession and only Matt Cutress (22) made double figures after that as Goff Baker took 3/21 and Matt Wynn took 3/13 to bowl Poynings out for 121 in the 32nd over.

Cuckfield 4th XI v Roffey 3rd XI

Roffey won the toss and elected to bat, but it turned out to be a mistake as they lost quick wickets as Peter Collins took 4/35. Opener, Adam Williams hit 29, but it was the late order of Martin Rivers (31) and Conor Griffiths (24) who helped Roffey to 131 all out. Will Rogers took 3/32 and Tom Bonanate took 2/24. Cuckfield only lost three wickets chasing it down as Tom Wright (26), Caleb Hawkins (35) and Tom Bonanate (44) knocked off most of the runs with Nathan Buckeridge (10*) and Tegh Gujral (6*) finishing it off in the 23rd over.
