Styris blasts century as Sussex reach t20 finals day

SUSSEX Sharks reached the t20 finals day on Tuesday (July 24) with a thrilling 39-run victory over Gloucestershire Gladiators at Hove.

Sussex were put into bat after losing the toss and lost openers Chris Nash and Luke Wright early to leave them 3-2.

Matt Prior then took the attack to the Gloucester bowlers and put on 98 for the third wicket with Murray Goodwin before he was run-out for 60, after hitting five fours and three sixes off 38 balls.

That brought New Zealander Scott Styris to the crease and he smashed 100 from only 37 deliveries – the third quickest t20 hundred ever – as he hit five fours and nine sixes in a 129-run stand with Goodwin, who was out to the final ball of the innings for 55.

Sussex ended up posting a mammoth 230-4 off their 20 overs.

Gloucester made a valiant effort to chase down the total and finished on 191-8 as Will Beer and Amjad Khan both took two wickets each.

The finals day takes place at Cardiff on August 25 and it is the first time Sussex have reached it since winning the tournament in 2009.
