Sussex Cricket League round-up: New leaders in second tier

It’s all change at the top of Sussex Cricket League Division Two with two matches remaining.

Lindfield dropped from first to third after suffering a nail-biting one-run defeat off the final ball away to St James’s Montefiore yesterday (Saturday).

Hayden James took 4-39 as Lindfield bowled St James’s out for 140, but the visitors subsided from 100-5 to 139 all out in reply with Sam Rattle taking 6-70. Shane Wilson-Yelverton top-scored with 42.

Worthing have replaced Lindfield at the summit on the back of a three-wicket success at home to Findon, who continue to occupy the second and final relegation place.

Sam Mannings top-scored with 52 as Findon posted 206 batting first despite Martyn Swift claiming 4-17. Josh Wood’s 73 was key to Worthing reaching their target with five balls to spare. Graham Manser bagged 3-46 for Findon.

Hastings Priory triumphed by two wickets away to third-bottom Ansty to move into the second and final promotion place.

Jed O’Brien continued his excellent season with 4-25 to help bowl Ansty out for 167 even though Grove Venter made 64. Hastings just about got over the line in reply after sliding from 117-2 to 146-7, Harry Finch top-scoring with 50.

Fourth-placed Three Bridges won by 73 runs away to Pagham. Conor Golding’s 96 was central to Bridges posting 216-9 batting first, with Justin Scott claiming 4-60. Matt Blandford claimed 5-33 as Pagham were dismissed for 143 in reply despite Joe Turner and Ryan Barratt hitting 47 and 45 respectively.

Ifield won by seven wickets at home to bottom club Crowhurst Park. Clive Tong’s 51 couldn’t prevent Park being bowled out for 146 with Guru Kedarnath and Jigar Parekh both taking 5-47. Greg Barton (56 not out) and Kedarnath (52) steered Ifield to victory with the bat.

Standings (all played 16 matches): 1 Worthing 363pts, 2 Hastings Priory 351, 3 Lindfield 349, 4 Three Bridges 318, 5 St James’s Montefiore 295, 6 Ifield 286, 7 Pagham 286, 8 Ansty 229, 9 Findon 224, 10 Crowhurst Park 108.
