The Australian Big Bash League competition kicked off its 10th edition with Phil Salt and Sussex overseas player Rashid Khan in action for Adelaide Strikers as they teamed up with former Sussex coach Jason Gillespie and former Sussex leg-spinner Danny Briggs.

Rashid was able to strike with the ball, trapping Peter Handscomb leg-before for four but couldn’t keep the runs down as he went for 1-38 off his allocation. Neither was able to go big with the bat as Salt was dismissed for eight and Rashid a golden duck as the Strikers collapsed to 102/9 chasing a target of 175.

Former teammate Briggs and Australian Daniel Worrall added some late runs to make it tight, but the Strikers fell 11 runs short to hand them a loss in their first game of the season.

Overseas signing Travis Head was in action for Australia A as Australia began their preparations for their Test series versus India. Head was in action in the first of two warm-up games in a three-day game between Australia A and an Indian XI, captaining the side.

The batting all-rounder called upon himself with the ball and proved useful, returning figures of 2-24 from 11 overs in the Indian first innings, claiming the wickets of Wriddhiman Saha for a four-ball duck and Kuldeep Yadav for 15.

Head only made 18 with the bat in the home sides reply to Indian’s total of 247/9 declared as side racked up 306/9 declared.

The Adelaide Strikers batsman was in action again with the ball but failed to yield a wicket as he finished with match figures of 2-66 from 22 overs as India declared on 189/9.

The target of 131 was not able to be reached as the warm-up match ended in a draw with Head at stumps on two not out.

Ollie Robinson was named as one of England’s reserve players for their upcoming tour of Sri Lanka this week.

Robinson, who took 14 wickets in the Bob Willis Trophy, was called up alongside James Bracey, Mason Crane, Saqib Mahmood, Craig Overton, Matthew Parkinson and Amar Virdi as a reserve for the tour.

Meanwhile, Jofra Archer, a mainstay of England’s Test squad, has been rested for the tour.
