Watkins stars as Goring ease to win

Watkins took incredible figures of five for eight in seven overs as Glynde were skittled out for only 39 in 20.1 overs.

Goring reached their target in just 9.1 overs as they moved up two places to seventh and out of the relegation places. They are now 21 points ahead of second-from-bottom Glynde.

The following day, Goring’s run in the Gray Nicolls T20 Cup came to an end when they lost by 86 runs away to Sussex League leaders Preston Nomads.

Goring were asked to bowl first against Glynde and produced their best bowling display of the season.

Matthew Cramp and Lewis Gimple top-scored for Glynde, with eight each, as they were blown away by Goring’s attack.

Watkins claimed a five-wicket haul and he was backed up well by Ellis Woolley and Ross Baumann, who both took two wickets.

Goring quickly chased down their target as Barnaby Lyons finished unbeaten on 17 and Jonathan Coutts hit 14 not out.

Goring then exited the T20 Cup at Preston Nomads, who were put into bat first and piled on the runs.

Oliver Gatting hit 30 off 18 balls, while Daniel Phillips crashed 46 from just 31 deliveries to get their side off to a flying start.

Robert Wakeford chipped in with 35, before James McKemey (29 not out) and Carl Simon (23 not out) helped Preston Nomads to 188 for five in their 20 overs.

Woolley bowled well and took two wickets for 24 runs from four overs, while Watkins, Lyons and Aaron Wyatt all took a wicket each.

In their chase, Goring began badly and lost Barnaby Lyons for six.

Things did not improve for them as Alex Maynard (one), Matt Keen (nought) and Gareth Cook (three) all fell cheaply to leave them in trouble at 40-4.

Danny Pittham did offer some resistance but he went for 30 to leave Goring 48 for five.

Baumann made 21 not out but that was not enough as Goring fell 87 runs short of their target, finishing on 102-8 in 20 overs.

Nomads will meet Middleton in the final on August 30.

Goring travel to high-flying Crawley Eagles, who are third, in the league on Saturday.
