We can win league, says Bexhill coach

Two more emphatic wins last weekend have catapulted in-form Bexhill up to second and within 17 points of leaders East Grinstead.

Cox said: “If we don’t win another game we will still have had a decent season, but why not? We’re just playing well and everyone’s contributing. We’re on a bit of a roll and long may it continue.”

Bexhill have won eight of their last 12 league games and are already up to the 300-point mark with another month of the season to go.

“If we win three of our last five games we’ve got every chance of winning the league and we’ve already beaten three of those teams this year,” Cox continued. “It might be 410, but I reckon 400 points wins the league.

“I said to this group of players when we got promoted (in 2013) I felt in five years we could be league contenders because of the quality we’ve got in the team.

“I’m not going to say we are going to win the league this year. We’re still a bit fragile at times, but we are where we are on merit. At this stage of the season you’re where you deserve to be.

“We’ve got zero pressure on us, we can just go and play our cricket. You can’t wish for a better situation.”

Four clubs are in contention for the title and they’re all covered by just 26 points.

Bexhill still have to play all of the other three. They go to third-placed Preston Nomads tomorrow (Saturday) before hosting Roffey next weekend. Grinstead will visit The Polegrove on August 29.

“We’ve got two of the big boys at home, which neither will particularly enjoy,” added Cox. “It’s a big advantage for us because the wicket’s a little bit different from what they’re used to.

“The big thing we’ve done is bowl teams out and our batting is improving. We’ve obviously got better and we’re just a little bit more consistent. We’ve always had some decent cricketers; it’s just doing it on the park and understanding how you do it. It’s starting to click a little bit.”

Callum Guest and Tim Hambridge are unavailable tomorrow, but Jamie Wicks and Luke Youngs should be back. Ashar Zaidi is doubtful with the sore knee which kept him out of this week’s Sussex second XI fixture.

“We’ll go out positively and try to win it, but they’ll still be favourites,” said Cox.
