WORTHING Cricket Club captain John Glover admits it has been an amazing start to the season for his side.

After victory in the opening round of the Twenty20 Cup, Worthing have recorded back-to-back league wins to sit top of Sussex League Division 2.

The league victories have come in impressive fashion as well. They bowled out Ifield for just 76, before recording a seven-wicket win last week and then dismissed Ansty for only 57 on Saturday as they cruised to a ten-wicket success.

Following their flying start, Glover feels that promotion is an achievable target for his side and said: “It’s been an amazing start to the season for us.

“We sat down before the start of the season and said that promotion was the aim and these two performances have given us real belief.

“The way that we have performed with the ball has been brilliant and we will hope to continue that throughout this season.

“I think this win was a real statement to show just what we are about this season.

“It’s just important that we do not get too carried away now. Tougher tests await and we must deal with that.”

Glover has been particularly impressed with some of his side’s younger players.

Josh Wood, Jamie Piper, Martyn Swift and Nick Oxley are all under the age of 19 and Glover has been delighted with their performances.

He said: “I looked around the field on Saturday and saw that we had five players that were part of the under-18 side last year.

“I think it’s a real testament to the quality of colts cricket at this club to have that many in the first team.

“A number of them have stepped up at the start of this season because of unavailability.

“But they have done such a good job that those players who have been away will face a tricky test trying to get back in this team.

“The start we have made has filled the whole squad with confidence and everyone is buzzing at present.”

Worthing sit 20 points clear of Three Bridges and Pagham, who both have 40 points from their opening two games.
