Worthing taste victory again

WORTHING Cricket Club tasted victory for the first time in six weeks on Saturday to ease them away from the Premier Division relegation battle.

With abandonments, draws and defeats since the last week of June, Worthing toasted a 30-point triumph over Brighton & Hove on Saturday to lift themselves 26 points clear of the bottom two.

Having watched Worthing post 168 after being stuck in, Brighton then finished 33 runs short of victory, mainly thanks to a devastating second spell from John Glover, who claimed 6-28.

Worthing captain Darryl Rebbetts welcomed the win and believes all the pressure is now on their opponents Eastbourne, who are second-from-bottom, this weekend.

He said: “It was really brilliant, I couldn’t have asked for any more from the lads. We did expect to get more on the board, but it didn’t play as well as a Worthing wicket normally does, so we were pleased to come out and skittle Brighton.

“It was at least a 200 wicket but we always back our bowlers. John came back in and did brilliantly in his second spell when he got their bloke who got 50 and was looking dangerous.

“We just bowled really well, I can’t fault it at all as the spinners were very controlled, before John came back and blasted them, which was always the plan.

“That was the main victory we wanted from our last few games. We play Eastbourne on Saturday and now they have their big guns that they have managed to bring in, like Mohammad Akram, the pressure is more on them now.

“Everyone is buzzing for the game on Saturday now and we’re up for the challenge, I think most of the league are keen to beat them at the moment.”

Worthing opener Andy Reid made 20, but there were notable middle-order scores from Rebbetts (34), Alex Harris (45) and Ian Gooding (28) as Worthing finished with 168.

It was Glover who then did the real damage with the ball after tight spinning spells, assisted by Mason Crane (2-40).

Steven Crosby top-scored with 50, but only Michael Rippon (15) and Christopher Atherton (25) made double figures as Brighton were all out for 136.
