The Field Place duo overcame Buckingham-shire’s Carole Robertson and Pamela Armstrong 24-23 in the final.

Davies and Woodcock raced into a 19-7 lead but were pegged back to 23-23, before they clinched the win in the final end.

It proved to be a long day for Davies and Woodock, who played three matches in the day. It began with a defeat in the fours, alongside Tina Phillips and Sheila Lock, before victory in the senior pairs semi-finals in the afternoon and then the final later in the day.

Davies said: “We did very well and it’s great to pick up the title. It was a really long day, we had our first match at nine in the morning and then the final ended at 9.30pm in the evening.

“We went out really fast in the final and then began to get tired, although we managed to hold on and get the win. It was a brilliant result and it feels great to have won the tournament.”

The success is not the first of Davies’ career as she has also won the national triples, senior singles and British Isles triples, all at Leamington Spa in previous years.

Davies added: “This was only the second year that I have played with Yvonne as she was not old enough to compete in this event before.

“We have a really great relationship and think alike when it comes to bowls.

“Going into the event we were hoping to win it and, fortunately, we managed to.”
