Depleted Thunder suffer heavy defeat at Tees Valley

A short-handed Worthing Thunder Basketball Club were beaten comfortably by Tees Valley Mohawks at the Teesside University Olympia Campus on Saturday evening.

With Worthing only able to field eight players due to Hank Rivers, Ben Budgen, Nick Corbin and Rhys Francis all being unavailable, the visitors found it difficult to compete against a full roster of Mohawks players.

Bud Johnston led all scorers with 34 points and he also grabbed 10 rebounds, Dominic Baker scored 15 with Joe Carter adding 13.

But Thunder were outmatched in every department due to the limited numbers, although coach Daniel Hildreth was pleased with the effort.

He said: “End of the day, they had a full roster of 12 to our eight, so it was always going to be hard, especially as we were playing a team that are looking to challenge for the title.

“They hung with them well and even though they pulled away as the game wore on, the guys didn’t let their heads drop and they played on and gave it their all. They fought for every rebound despite Tomas Seduikis being our tallest player at 6ft 5in and just played as hard as they could.”
