Farewell to a legend at Hickstead

HICKSTEAD'S famous British Jumping Derby meeting gets underway on Thursday this week. The Carpetright Derby is one of the most famous equestrian events in the world. Founded in 1960 by the late Douglas Bunn, it is the only competition that sees riders take on the front descent of the infamous Derby Bank, the biggest of its kind to be found anywhere in the world.

Show jumping fans with have the chance to say farewell to a legend on Sunday at 2.30pm when Cortaflex Mondriaan, who won the Derby three times with William Funnell will parade in the International Arena to mark his retirement from show jumping.

As well as the famous Carpetright Derby, the British Jumping Derby Meeting also hosts a full range of senior national showjumping classes, with something for nearly every calibre of affiliated rider.It also plays host to many Horse of the Year Show showing qualifiers, a polo exhibition match and carriage driving.

Spectators are guaranteed some thrilling action during the four days of competition, with the Bunn Leisure Derby Trial on Friday being the only chance to qualify for the Carpetright Derby itself on Sunday.

As well as plenty of action over the four days in the famous International Arena, outside rings will also be busy and there is an enormous shopping village and ample places for refreshments.
