FOOTBALL: Akehurst delighted to back in Rebels squad

MIDFIELDER Karl Akehurst made a welcome return to the Worthing squad on Saturday after recovering from breaking his left fibula in December.

Akehurst suffered the injury while working on December 6 and it was initially feared he could miss the rest of the season. But his recovery has gone better than expected and he has missed only 11 matches, owing to all the postponements.

Although he did not get on against Eastbourne Town, Akehurst was delighted to be back involved and said: "I would have liked to got on but the manager knows what he is doing and will use me another time.

"Brett and Kenno have been doing fantastically well and when I get my chance, I've got to take it."

After Akehurst's injury, Worthing did not win for seven matches, but he said: "That was due to things on and off the pitch but we got over it and are back on it now. We're chasing promotion for the third time in a row. We're only four points off the top so, hopefully, we can go and win it."

On his injury, Akehurst said: "I was gutted when it happened and am just so happy now.

"I've had no problem with it and it's felt fine in training, although I've had the odd twinge.

"I've got a metal plate and screws in my leg to make it stronger and I'm just glad to be back part of it now. I missed a few weeks but the weather did me a favour. I feel fit, really good, and can't wait to get back out there."

Rebels manager Simon Colbran said: "It's great to have Karl back in the squad and I'm really happy for him. He's got a great attitude and is a great lad."
