FOOTBALL: Albion star Andrew Whing's weekly column (February 5)

CALVIN ANDREW'S late goal on Saturday, which gave us a win at the death, was a much-welcome change from us conceding late on.

It was a massive result and we really need to try to start putting some distance between ourselves and the relegation zone.

It was great to keep it tight until the final whistle but it was frustrating to be serving my suspension and just watching.

Calvin is of course on loan from Crystal Palace but had no trouble about celebrating his goal afterwards. He was delighted to have scored for us, and is a Brighton player at the moment.

Being a Villa fan, though, I'm not sure I could ever celebrate a goal for Birmingham if I was ever on loan there.

I don't think I could show my face at Villa Park again if I went to them up-the-road in the first place.

But I think I'm safe as I can't even score for Brighton.

I just about manage it in training some times, so I don't think I'll be on loan at Birmingham for my goalscoring in the near future.

We've done extremely well in strengthening the squad in the transfer window.

It's a boost to have a recognised left-back in Jim McNulty as it has been a fill-in spot recently. I wasn't playing at Stockport when he played, but the manager and chairman speak very highly of him.

I've played against Craig Davies a few times and he's a quick lad, but is also big, so is a great presence.

Hopefully, he can come in to give grandad Fozzy (Nicky Forster) a bit of help.

Fozzy is one we all look up to as he sorts out all the fines and things like that.

But he's getting on a bit now and going a bit grey, so I'm not sure how long he's got left in him.
