FOOTBALL: Rebels hit four in win at Whyteleafe

WORTHING Football Club recorded their second successive Ryman League Division 1 South win on Saturday (February 27) with a 4-1 victory at Whyteleafe.

The gane did not start well for Rebels, though, as they lost central defender Matt Simpson to a fractured cheekbone in an early challenge with former Rebel Chris O'Flaherty.

Simpson was taken by ambulance to East Surrey Hospital.

Whyteleafe's Danny Oakins shot just wide on 15 minutes before Rebels took the lead in the 23rd minute when Evan Archibald scored for the third consecutive game when he headed home Ben Johnson's corner.

An Ellis Conroy own goal from Archibald's right-wing cross doubled Rebels' lead three minutes later.

Brett Patton headed home the third from another Johnson corner on 38 minutes before Jamie Groves crossed for Ben Williamson to make it 4-0 on 43 minutes.

Whyteleafe got a goal back on 45 minutes when O'Flaherty's shot was bundled over the line by Oakins.

Whyteleafe started the second half well and hit the woodwork three times in the opening 10 minutes.

Darren Watson, Ryan Royston and O'Flaherty were all denied by Worthing keeper Alan Mansfield before the home side ran out of steam and Worthing could have extended their lead late on.

Richard Greenfield's cross was deflected against his own post by Fred Fleming and Wayne Clarke then shot wide in injury-time.
