FOOTBALL: Rebels leave it late at Crowborough

WORTHING scored twice in the last eight minutes on Tuesday evening to move up to second in Ryman League Division 1 South.

Will Jenkins, with his first goal for the club, headed Rebels' winner three minutes into injury time at bottom-of-the-table Crowborough, who have now not tasted a league victory since November 8.

It had looked as though Crowborough's 19-game winless run would come to an end when Andrew Crush fired the home side ahead with just 19 minutes left.

But Rebels then moved Will Jenkins from defence into attack and with eight minutes to go, Ross Treleaven, against his former club, drew Worthing level from close-range with his 12th goal of the season.

Then, three minutes into injury-time, Rebels got a crucial winner which keeps their title hopes alive. Chris O'Flaherty's cross to the back post was headed home by Jenkins which keeps Worthing six points behind leaders Cray.

Rebels joint manager Alan Pook said: "For 80 minutes, Crowborough were the better side. But in the last 10 minutes, we put more crosses into their box and had more chances than we had had in the whole game.

"We were extremely poor but the game changed when we put Charlie Farmer on at right-back and moved Will Jenkins up front, so we had a physical presence up there.

"It's all about winning at this stage of the season, and that's six points out of six now, and we've gone up to second.

"It's a good sign to be winning away without playing well.

"All our games are going to be tough now and we've got seven cup finals left.

"I don't think we will win all seven if we perform how we did tonight, but what we've got to try to do is go unbeaten.

"The season is all set up for a crucial Easter period. We are at home to Merstham on the Saturday and then at Eastbourne Town on the Monday.

"Those games are going to be vital for all the teams at the top."

Mickey Demetriou missed the match at Crowborough owing to a trial at a Football League club.
